Mesnes Park Bridge
9 months of hard work...
Listening to what residents like, are concerned about and what their dreams are for the future of their community started this project. Senior, trainee and voluntary community organisers have been door knocking in rain, snow and sun just to find out what the community really care about, this bridge was the most common project idea that came from listening to the people of Newton and Earlestown. Planning, funding bid writing, consultation, workshops, painting and organising followed.
A big thanks to Limitless Urban Arts, Newton le Willows community organisers, Creative Frame, Merseyside Fire and Rescue and funding organisations(Community First and Ignite! North West cic). More importantly those who volunteered their time through a variety of different ways.

Jonathan is a volunteer community organiser who spent his time interviewing local people of Newton and Earlestown, his goal was to capture people's stories about the heritage of the local area. He is intending to create a short video that people can access in the future to find out what our piers got up. Jonathan said, "we have realised how powerful listening to the people in the community can be, this project is very similar but with a twist, meaning we listen to people's life stories and evidence our work for everyone to access"
Mesnes park bridge project
A massive thanks to Jonathan Parker @www.creativeframe.org.uk
for this great bit of work. As you can see the bridge now comes to life.
There is still work to be done to take this to a new level, but a great first attempt.
If you have any ideas for a similar project then please get in touch, this could potentially work really well in schools and colleges.

Clean and Green
Trees estate community group in partnership with Ignite community organisers organised a massive clean up on the estate in June 2014. This project started with door knocking from community organisers, after months of listening it became apparent that one of the major concerns on the estate was fly tipping. After several meeting with volunteers on the estate it was decided that 'Clean and green' project would go ahead. Litter picks were done by children and volunteers, youths offered gardening to older people, WA12 Radio played music, Saints Community Development Foundation donated tickets and RKSC recycling firm helped to move 22 skips worth of rubbish (50% of which was recycled and donated back into the community group). Funding was sourced from Ignite! North West CiC and the Rotary.

'Your Voice'
www.takeahint.org.uk
Our mission is to give young people a voice on particular social and political issues that affect their lives in their community. To do this, we will be working with young people in seven areas of Merseyside, to create performance and art that gives their chosen issue a platform to be heard. Whether it be through music, art, film, drama, dance... we will ensure that the performances created will be seen by important partners in their community such as members of the council and emergency services.
Take a Hint Theatre Company came to Newton Boys and Girls club to deliver this amazing project, during June 2014 children delivered their show to parents, Councillors and Merseyside Police, this was an effective way to provide children with a voice and have it heard in front of some of the most powerful members of our community.
Ignite! North West CIC would like to thank Dan, Lucie and Sally from Take a Hint Theatre company and all of the hard work from volunteers; this project brought together diverse members of the community.

'Community Garden'
To respond to the needs of the community, volunteers, community organisers, WA12 Radio, Newton Boys and Girls staff, and 40+ children came together on Monday to create a community Garden. Thanks to a major donation of plants from Trebaron and funding from Ignite! North West CiC, a community garden has brought new life to Newton Boys and Girls youth club in Newton-le-Willows, additional donations helped from North West Timber and Tesco. To celebrate the start of spring local people from all walks of life come together to appreciate and enhance their environment in this unique project. Over 40 plants were put in the ground, new fencing and a general clean-up of the area have all contributed to creating this beautiful garden. Volunteers have played a major role in facilitating this project and helped to provide education and experiences for local children, it is hoped that this event will inspire more participatory projects and encourage the children to maintain what they have started. The treasurer from Newton Boys and Girls Club said “This has been part of our plan to improve the club and make it a nice place, I believe by involving the children in the process gives them a sense of ownership and pride. I would like to thank everyone involved and donations that made this happen”.

In partnership with the Saints Community Development Foundation Ignite brought people together from different communities in the North West. We were joined by valuable volunteers and project users from Newton-le-Willows and Eccleston. To show our appreciation for the work they do in their communities we paid for 20+ people to enjoy the game at Langtree Park and to meet the Saints mascot 'Boots'. SAINTS stretched their unbeaten run to five with a 40-22 victory over Catalan Dragons. Tries from Josh Jones, a Tommy Makinson double and a further score from Jordan Turner gave the home side a deserved lead. The dragons hit back but the SAINTS were too strong in the end. It was a great night that gave some people an opportunity to watch a live saints match for the first time at Langtree park.
On Saturday the 5th April community organisers from Ignite! North West CIC arranged for 28 people from different communities to come together and enjoy a day out at the DW stadium. Children and volunteers from Newton and Eccleston enjoyed the Latics as they beat Leeds United who suffered their seventh defeat in eight games as Martyn Waghorn's first-half goal gave play-off chasing Wigan victory at the DW Stadium. This could only have happened thanks to Community Vouchers donated by the Football club, funding from Ignite! North West CIC and dedicated volunteers in the community. The Director from Ignite! North West CIC said “This was a great day out for everyone involved; it’s a great pleasure to give some of these individuals a chance to attend a live football game for the first time in their lives. I would like to thank Jimmy from Newton-le-Willows FC for providing this opportunity, the volunteers who helped out and we intend to run similar projects in the near future”. One youth who attended even sent in his picture in to Ignite! with Roy Keane stood next to him. If you would like to be involved or volunteer on similar projects in the future then please contact your community organiser.
‘District Primary Community DJ’s’
During the half term in April ‘District Primary Community DJ’s’ attended Newton Boys and Girls Club for a fun day which involved crafts, sports and the creation of their very own radio show which has been listened to by people in the local community. Thanks to partnership working which involved community organisers at Ignite! North West, Newton Boys and Girls Club staff, teachers from District Primary School, volunteers and WA12RADIO: this amazing project was created. Children from the local primary school enjoyed a day at the youth club where they presented a 2 hour show which included ‘Jingles’, presenting, music and interviews about the local community and other fun activities were also provided on the day. The manger of WA12RADIO said “This was a fantastic opportunity which provided the children with education and experience in community radio media, we intend to complete similar projects in the future and reach out to all ages, sexes and abilities”. If you have a group that may be interested in completing a show then call your community organiser or visitwww.wa12radio.co.uk .

When door knocking on Acorn street I met a woman who is partially blind, she will be starting a project that will bring people together in Newton and Earlestown with similar disabilities. We are aiming to start some art workshops with Passsoul Studio Services CIC in January 2015 and potentially other activities. If you know anyone who may be interested in joining this group, or you would like to volunteer some time helping the group them please comment below or email me krysiek.tarnawski@corganisers.org.uk
Newton and Earlestown Food bank
The very first listening of my training year produced Newton and Earlestown Food Bank. The first person i listened to told me about their own experiences with food poverty as a child and expressed thei concerns for growing food and fuel poverty in the current time. They decided that they could open a small community led Food Bank that might also offer out advice and moral support to people in need.
Through knocking on doors and my own personal contacts i found other people who felt that Food poverty was a serious issue who really wanted to help to build a food bank provided for the community by the community.
We sat down together alot to talk about what we needed to do, what our rules and boundaries were, where we would get food and funds from and everything in between. The volunteers decided that they didn't want to join the Trussell Trust and that they were happy to do this on a small scale as a way of the community helping each other out. We paid a visit to Grace Food Bank in Sheffield who talked us through all of their processes and even set us up a website and email address to get us started.
We were kindly offered space for a store room from Sure Start Childrens Centre on Patterson Street, and lots of local traders and organisations offered to keep a Grub Tub on their premises to collect food donations.
As of January 2014 Newton and Earlestown Food Bank has issued close to 100 food parcels and will continue their good work well into the next year.
If you're interested in volunteering with Newton and Earlestown Food Bank please call Emily: 07703137416
