Maddie and John have been working on the Fairbrothers Estate since July 2014. Our aim is to listen to the resident's loves and concerns about the area. Fairbrothers estate is Belvedere road, Queens Drive and all the streets surrounding on that estate. You will probably see us in the area over the next year knocking on doors so come and say Hi and get your voice heard!

Fairbrothers Football!
After listening to children from Newton-Le-Willows it was
clear that they wanted more sporting activities. On the 19th August
we started to deliver football sessions on the field just off Borron Road for
ages 11-19. Over the time we have had over 40 participants, the youngest being
8 and the oldest being 16.
Because the football was only planned until the 28th October, Community Organiser John did listenings on the children who all expressed they would like the football to carry on but a concern seemed to be that it was getting dark and they could not see the football! With the help of volunteer - Phil, the sessions continued for a further two weeks at an indoor venue - Newton Boys and Girls Club.

Woof Walk!
"In one of our earlier listenings, somebody raised a concern about waking their dog alone and suggested a dog walking group. This went ahead on Lyme and Wood Pits Country Park. During the walk we had 17 people and 7 dogs join us. However, Gracie the Greyhound and Roxy the Alsatian must have been the slowest walkers as they were the only ones left at the end for a group photo!" - Maddie |
Newton Youth Council!
Our Volunteer Lauren, wants to help you set up a youth council for Newton-Le-Willows. If you are interested in getting involved then just email [email protected] . It's for people aged between 11 and 18 and will essentially be a group of young people listening to other young people to collate views representative of the young people of Newton-Le-Willows. Then acting on behalf of these views will put forward to appropriate groups and organisations ideas for activities and provisions, rather than the grown ups deciding what you do!
Youth Club
I have been involved in helping the senior youth club get up and running along with a fantastic team of people! All at Newton Boys and Girls Club, along with volunteer youth leaders, Linda, Emily, Victoria, Emma, Lauren, Gary and Aaron. It seems to going well with good participation numbers. Community organising is key within the youth club as all the activity ideas stem from listening's with the kids - what they want at their youth club! On Friday 31st October the kids, along with support from Victoria, Emma, Linda, Emily and myself did a car wash to raise money for children in need. They did a fantastic job and managed to raise £109! Well done guys! - Maddie |
D.A.R.K provides kit for u13s!
D.A.R.K (Daveys acts of random kindness) - A community group set up in the memory a local young man who sadly passed away in 2013 aims are to self fundraise, then to use the money to do random acts of kindness in the community did a Memorial football match in July. The money they raised was used to provide a football kit for Newton-Le-Willows Football Club's under 13's team who were struggling to find a sponsor for their kit.
In September we went into Wargrave School and listened to all the year 5 and 6 children about what they love about where they live, and what project ideas they have. During our listenings we taught the children all about the community organisers role and they even had a practise of being community organisers themselves by listening to their fellow classmates. Lots of fun was had learning about listening and the barriers to listening by playing games such as chine whispers and back to back drawing game. Overall great fun had by all!
UC Crew in Newton! With the help of our volunteers in Newton le Willows the UC Crew (Youth Group based around Breakdancing) will be providing monthly classes at Newton Boys & Girls club. Funding they have received has allowed for a discounted rate on the classes.
Also the young volunteers involved will have their hours of service accredited and receive references from the leaders of UC Crew to help them gain employment. |
Krip-Hop Nation!
After speaking with members of the community who felt there was a lack of hip-hop culture in area we decided, together with our volunteers to address this issue. With the help of the St Helens Culture Guides we were able to secure free tickets to an inspiring performance.
'Krip-Hop Nation' is a multi-national hip hop collective showcasing their passion and talent in their native tongues. Using powerful and emotive lyrics to discuss the stigma and discrimination faced by those within the disabled community whilst demonstrating that they feel that they are in no way limited to what you can accomplish when you follow your dreams. The heavy hip hop beats, punctuated by progressive drum and bass interludes and reggae samples were provided by ‘Rob Da Noize’, part of the Krip-Hop collective who last toured the UK with the Sugar Hill Gang. Krip-Hop’s creater, Leroy Moore states that ‘we are more than musicians, we are activitst’, regularly speaking on issues of disabled rights in America. |

PASSSOUL PROJECT
Ignite! CIC have been working with Passsoul Studios in Earlestown to provide a hands on art project with members of the local community who suffer from some form of visual impairment.
The project is going excellently and will end in each participant 'up-cycling' a piece of furniture of their choosing with a personal decoupage design. |
Visually Impaired Guided Walk Through Lyme & Wood Country Park
After the huge success of the on going arts project, the visually impaired group expressed an interest in becoming more physically active. As this is a huge part of their lives that they feel they have lost.
The first activity we had organised was a guided walk though Lyme & Wood country park provided by their park ranger from CORY Environmental. Everyone fully enjoyed the day and it has made the group much more eager to do further activities. |
